Intermediate Crochet Cowl – Stella Moebius
Introduction
Looking for a quick gift make that you can make in a day? The intermediate crochet cowl, the Stella Moebius cowl is just that – super quick make that can be made in a day.
The Stella Moebius has been an idea in the back of my mind since I made the Blooming Cowl but for some reason I can’t really explain, I didn’t make it until this last weekend. Well at the time of writing it was last weekend, but probably by the time this pattern is released it will be about 2 weeks ago.
Twisted cowl pattern inspiration
Cowls and scarves are my winter jam, they are great accessories in my quasi teenage daily attire of jeans and a hoodie. This cowl is no exception and has joined the ranks in my growing wardrobe of cowls! Twisted cowls are a little harder to create, as is a twisted cowl pattern, however they make a great alternative and addition to any woman’s gift ideas list.
It’s also the perfect pattern to be included in the 24 days of Quickies blog hop by Marly Bird – eeek!
Every day for the first 24 days of December 2020 there will be not 1, not 2, but 3 FREE patterns available to download – 2 crochet and 1 knitting. Read on to find out how to grab your FREE copy on the 18th December 2020 ONLY.
Stella Moebius – Yarn love
Of course, this, like the Stella Infinity and Stella Cowls is made with Scheepjes Whirl Fine Art, in the colourway of Classicism a gorgeous blue fade. I worked my cowl from the outside of the cake as I can never find the centre. I’m not sure if this is a ploy or by design but I like to work from the centre of cakes so I notice it every single time. It doesn’t stop me from buying them though.
The Fine Art Whirl is 215 – 225G / 460m Merino blend ombre cake. Once again I am in love with the results of this cake. Soft, and easy to work with, this literally worked up for me in a day – most of the work was completed during the school day. This is also true for my amazing testers.
Once again, I have featured the Scheepjes Whirl Fine Art in a design. I can’t help it. I love the feel of this cake so much.
Soft, smooth but with a springy/stretchy quality the Fine Art Whirl is 50% Merino, 25% Micro fibre and 25% Acrylic. This DK weight yarn is fabulous.
It has the smooth gradient that whirl users love in a DK cake that is the perfect size for a cowl or scarf. Priced at £29.99 – its a bit pricier than the regular whirl, although being the same size cake 250g. My guess is this is because of the fibre content.
A thicker variety than the regular whirls, there is still the awesome stitch definition and it is so lovely to work with. I am now working on using all the colours in the collection!
Stella Moebius pattern info & tips
The Stella Moebius is an intermediate crochet cowl pattern, however, it is written with beginners in mind.
The moebius is essentially a twisted loop. You create this loop at the beginning of your work, and then continue work around this whole loop for the remainder of the piece. For a visual guide to creating a moebius loop please see here.
When forming your initial chain, make a few loops and then remove them from your hook. Insert your hook from back to front into the first chain made, and back through the working loop. Continue to make your chain and follow the pattern instructions.
This will help to ensure that you do not twist your chain – this is VERY important. IF you twist your initial chain, your intended twist will not appear having the opposite effect.
Alongside the moebius technique this cowl features, double crochet and puff stitches and a simple semi repeating pattern. If you have previously made the Stella Cowl you will be familiar with the puff stitch. It will also mean you are familiar with the pattern and know what to expect from the design. The difference in the moebius is that you work the pattern from the centre of the work and so the pattern appears on “both sides” at the same time.
Use a stitch marker to keep a track of the beginning of your work. Because you are working in a longer loop round it can be easy to get confused and think you are working in the wrong place on a moebius. I use a brightly coloured stitch marker that contrasts with my work to ensure that I know where the beginning of the work is – this is especially helpful when two successive rounds are the same.
Yarn: Scheepjes Whirl Fine Art or 400-450m of any dk weight yarn. I love gradient cakes and think this would work with most gradient or long striping yarns. The effect with a pooling or mottled yarn would be interesting and I think a solid colour would be gorgeous.

Hello Bernadine, I am in the process of making your stella cowl (I downloaded your pattern in December) and I have a question about row 9. Is this row a reducing row? If I follow the instructions for that row, I will be skipping stitches thus tightening the cowl. Thank you. Jen
Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for reaching out to me.
Sorry to hear you are having an issue with the pattern.
Can you send me a photo of where you are so I can help you via my facebook page please @menmyhook
The row you highlighted doesn’t reduce and it has skipped stitches so I want to be sure I say the right thing so you can get finished.
Thanks and speak to you soon,
B x
So beautiful! Thank you.
thank you, I hope you enjoy making it.
Merry Xmas
