Harmony Square – inspiration
Who doesn’t love a granny square? They come in all sizes, are a great quick make, an easy win when your a beginner crocheter and actually we have all probably made one at one time or another. Even if, like me, we generally don’t make them anymore.
When I heard about the Friendship Squares CAL by Sunflower Cottage Crochet, I immediately wanted to get involved. I liked the idea of the challenge of designing my own granny square pattern. It’s such an iconic thing, and there are so many that creating something new is the kind of thing that get’s me going.
The Harmony Square, sort of fell off my hook without a real plan. I had the idea to see if I could do a type of shape in a shape thing. By the time I sat down to design my squares, I knew the general themes we were hoping to go with and I wanted to design something that represented what to me we were as well as what we were collectively creating.
IF it helps – in my head, and how I explained it to my kids was – you know you get that bird in a bird in a bird thing at Christmas, I wanna do that with a granny square. It also kind of reminds me of the early learning toy where you fit shapes through the slots of what was a hexagon or octagonal “ball” when I had one.
Granny Square pattern yarn love and materials
For this square I have used Deramores Studio Aran. This is a very soft, no pill, 100% acrylic yarn. Available solely from Deramores, and part of their wider studio range, this yarn is super soft and has a sheen to it that is a little different to most acrylic yarns. It is also wound slightly differently to more widely available acrylics – more like a roving yarn.
