Free granny square market bag pattern inspiration
Being a bag lover I’m not sure I need much inspiration to make another bag, however this granny square market pattern came to life partly because I use a lot of reusable bags in my shopping and partly because I wanted to experiment with the yarn colour that I wouldn’t necessarily normally use. The Granny Merge Market Bag pattern is the second pattern I have designed using this combo, you can check out the Granny Merge Cocoon pattern here.
Granny Merge Market Bag yarn and materials
To make my granny square market bag pattern, I used 1 x Azalea from Hobbii in 02, Pink Delight. This is a gradient yarn cake made with 4 individual strands that are loosely wound and hold themselves together. While I LOVE gradient yarn cakes, I received this particular cake in a lucky bag and wouldn’t normally choose this colour way so I was stumped for a project to use it on. This yarn, like many cakes of a similar kind, is an acrylic/cotton blend. Available in 10 colours and priced at £14.90, you can find out more about this specific yarn in my post here
Granny Square Market Bag pattern info & tips
This granny merge market square bag pattern is a beginner crochet project. Using the entire cake, this pattern can easily be replicated in any weight of yarn – producing a variety of results!! Use the traditional granny stitch, and alternate with regular double crochets to create the contrasting stitch effect in the squares. Then join and create the handle – et voila you have a market bag. To make mine I worked from the centre of the cake to the outside to ensure that I used the darkest colour for the handle.
