Classic Diamond Filet Crochet Rectangle Shawl – Vivian
Looking for a light shawl crochet pattern that is easy to work up? Vivian is a filet crochet rectangle shawl worked using the filet crochet technique. Read on to find out more about the design and how to get your copy of the pattern.
Vivian Wrap Inspiration
So many things inspired this design and the naming of it. When I started working on It’s A Wrap, and definitely by the time the kickstarter was fully funded, the first version of this filet crochet rectangle shawl pattern existed.
One of the things I like about filet crochet is the ability to create a pattern that is reflective – as I did with my Reflections filet crochet pattern. I like the regularity of repeat patterns as they are easy to work with and visualise. For Vivian, I tried to include a regular pattern or shape, but, have some open and some solid sections within the filet crochet rectangle shawl pattern.
Although I planned to keep this rectangle shawl pattern accessible to beginners, I firmly believe that everything is difficult when you are a ‘beginner’ and that it all has to be learnt, so why not start with something more challenging? It helps to keep you interested and involved when working on this filet crochet rectangle shawl pattern, any crochet pattern that you are interested in making really.
I chose a diamond shape as that is what appeared in the chart making program when this design was falling out of my head. This is what totally inspired the name of this design, once I had figured out how to name the designs in the book. Julia Roberts as Vivian in Pretty Woman, in that red dress and necklace. I always planned to make this filet crochet rectangle shawl in black but I really want to see it in a bold sparkly red also.
Rectangle Shawl crochet pattern yarn & materials
To make my Vivian I used 3 x Twister Solid in Black from Hobbii, a firm favourite of mine and used to design the Granny Merge Maxi and Reflections. To find out more about this yarn, check out the post here.
For the second I plan to use a 1250m custom gradient cake from Crochet UK using multiple reds and a sparkly thread through the entire cake and with a traditional wrap. To find out more about the cakes available from Crochet UK check out the review post here.
Light shawl crochet pattern info & tips
Vivian is an experienced beginner filet crochet rectangle shawl pattern. If you are new to Filet Crochet this is a little more difficult simply because of the shifting repeat which means there is more counting and concentration required than my usual patterns.
That is not to say it is difficult, just that it needs more attention consistently. This filet crochet shawl uses standard stitches and works up quickly to create a fairly substantial but open and light rectangle shawl.
There are two sizes included in the pattern and instructions on how to adjust your gauge to work it in a dk or 3 weight yarn are also included.
Terms: US crochet terms.
