Oversized puff stitch shawl inspiration
If you love shawls and the puff stitch as much as I do, then putting the two together in an oversized puff stitch shawl is an obvious choice at some point. After I finished designing Angelina, I wanted to do something similar but use more puff stitches. The result is Puffin Lace, an oversized shawl featuring puff stitches that take on the appearance of a flower bud.
Oversized puff stitch shawl yarn & materials
Puffin Lace was designed to be featured in Issue No. 80 of Crochet Now Magazine, published in March 2022. The yarn that was selected for this design was new to me, James C Brett It’s 100% Cotton DK in the colour IC08. This yarn is 100% cotton, 100g balls at £3.25 per skein. Available in 9 light bright shades this yarn is very easy to work with. To find out more about the yarn, and alternative project ideas, head over to the review here.
For more widely available yarn choices for to make your Puffin Lace, oversized puff stitch shawl you could also use 1 x Twister and 1 x Twister Solid, 1 x Scheepjes Whirl & Whirlette, or Stylecraft Naturals Bamboo Cotton in similar amounts.
Puffin Lace Shawl pattern info & tips
This oversized puff stitch shawl pattern is suitable for confident beginners. The majority of the stitching is in puff stitches, which some may find a bit hard going on the wrists at times. Also, the puffs eat up a great portion of the yarn used. The lacy structure is created over a 4 row repeating pattern that is interspersed with puff stitches. The overall effect is lacy and feminine.
As usual with all my shawls, gauge isn’t super important, but consistency and stitch definition are. As you can be a little flexible with the yarn weight that you choose to make your oversized puff stitch shawl, also be a little flexible with your hook size and go with your experience.
As this is design is based on a repeating pattern, you can easily adjust the design to create a shawlette, or more standard sized shawl, as well as continuing up to around 2000 yards for a really oversized puff stitch shawl.
