Looking for a beginner solid granny square pattern? The Communion Square is an easy to make, solid granny square that is suitable for all levels of skill. Read on to find out more behind the inspiration for the square, and how to make yours.
Communion Square – solid granny square inspiration
The Communion square is named so one of the many meanings I found for the word communion was ‘alliance, agreement friendly association’ and I thought that was fitting as part of the Friendship Squares Cal project – which this square was designed for.
If you haven’t been following along, or find this pattern later, the Friendship Squares Cal is a combined granny square blanket pattern conceived by Helen from Sunflower Cottage Crochet. 25 Designers came together to create 40 9inch granny square patterns with the theme of texture to guide us.
The Communion square is beginner friendly, and doesn’t quite appear to be square when you look at it. It its, but it is definitely rounded and so will require blocking if you want it to appear strictly straight. If you don’t and join it with other squares it should even itself out provided the stitch counts match.
Solid granny square pattern yarn love and info
I used Deramores Studio Aran in Jasmin and Juniper to complete this design. Weighing in at about 55gms this is a great stash buster pattern. Deramores Studio Aran is a super soft anti piling yarn. Available in 23 colours, this yarn is great for blankets, and wearables. To check out other projects made with this yarn see the Marian Bay Cocoon.
Communion Square collab – Friendship Squares Cal
The Communion Square is the second square designed by me to be featured in the Friendship Squares Cal, the first is the Harmony Square which can be found here.
Many thanks again to Sarah from Sunflower Cottage Crochet for providing a video tutorial for this solid granny square pattern which you can find below.

Hi. I’m also trying to access the pattern but with no luck. When I select use a coupon in Ravelry all I get is a slim white box with an “X” in it at the top of the screen. Any suggestions?
Hi Gerlinde,
Thanks for your message and interest in the Square. Unfortunately, I can’t help with Ravelry issues, i’m not even sure how to report a fault to them. The code is still active and will work on their site. If the page doesn’t display properly, the only thing I can suggest is refresh or reloading the page and try again. It’s not the most helpful advice but should definitely work.
I look forward to seeing your square

The code is not working.
Hi Sharin,
I’m sorry you’re having trouble using the code. I have checked on Ravelry and it is still working. Please make sure you have the right code – I have two squares included in the Friendship Blanket Cal. Please try to use the code again and let me know if you are successful. The squares are both available as a free pdf download until the end of the CAL.
Thanks and I look forward to seeing your squares.
