Hawthorne Wrap – free easy rectangle shawl crochet pattern inspiration
You can never have too many shawls right? When I was designing Hawthorne, to feature on the Cosy Rosie UK blog, I knew immediately that I wanted to create an easy rectangle shawl crochet pattern with the same pattern. Large oversized and somewhat lacy – perfect rectangle shawl for summer in Wales if you are me.
The easy repeat used in this beginner crochet wrap pattern is perfect for a first shawl, and although I wear cowls a lot, I like the versatility that an crochet wrap has. Trying to encourage more people to wear shawls is also easier when you create free easy rectangle shawl crochet patterns, as they are easier to count and wear!

Easy crochet wrap pattern yarn & materials
To create my Hawthorne beginner crochet shawl, I used a 1500m 4ply Gradient Cake from Crochet UK in the colour way John O’Groats and the block gradient style. I was fortunate to be a tester for the block gradient and eager to try it out in a design. To find out more about the difference in this to a regular gradient cake, check out the review post here.
If you have a stash of Twisters, Sultan or Scheepjes cakes taking up space then this wrap is perfect for that! You will need 1 Cake and 1 complimentary solid to complete the design as written. However, you can extend this easy rectangle shawl crochet pattern by using two cakes and adding an additional repeat section!
Beginner crochet shawl pattern info & tips
The Hawthorne easy crochet wrap pattern uses a combination of standard stitches intermixed with puff stitches – a favourite of mine. I know some people don’t like them as they can give your wrist a bit of a workout, but there’s just enough to keep this free easy rectangle shawl crochet pattern interesting without seeming like a chore.
The easy repeat makes this a great project to watch a movie with. Each section is stacked against the next and while the same stitches are used throughout, the sections do change so pay attention to where you are in the pattern. Gauge is important – this design will use 99% of the required yarn. I generally find that my test group needs to go down 0.5 – 1 hook size to achieve the same gauge as me with this type of yarn.
