Lorelai crochet shawl pattern inspiration
My favourite crochet stitches are the ones that give a little bit of a texture but aren’t too difficult to work up. The Crossed Double Crochet is definitely one of those in my opinion. Simple but effective, this design was one of the earlier patterns that came to be while I was designing for my first book It’s a Wrap, however, once it was finished I quickly decided that it wouldn’t be a part of the book. So many ideas, not enough pages, a total first world crochet designer problem.
Originally, this had a couple of other names, but when I got it together to release the pattern I realised none of those went and decided on Lorelai as a homage to the Mother and Daughter duo from Gilmore Girls, who both have the same name. Why? Because they are almost inseparable pair – which I find cute and odd at the same time, but totally apt for the crossed double crochet stitch used in this easy crochet shawl pattern.
Crossed Double Crochet Shawl pattern yarn & materials
To make my Lorelai crossed double crochet shawl, I used a 1250m 4ply gradient cake from Crochet UK in the colourway Avebury. Crochet UK is a small business in the UK that specialises in gradient yarn cakes. I especially like the custom and mystery cake options. To find out more about Crochet UK and their yarns, check out the blog post here.
For more traditional yarn options, to recreate the Lorelai Crossed Double Crochet Shawl you will need 1 x Twister and 1 x Twister Solid,
Crossed Double Crochet pattern info & tips
The Lorelai Wrap crossed double crochet pattern is graded beginner, because while this isn’t a ‘beginner’ stitch, it is created from standard crochet stitches and is very easy to construct/recreate.
The whole wrap is based on a simple repeat that features the crossed double crochet to highlight it in a subtle way. The result is a fairly solidly constructed wrap that has some relief in the crossed double crochet rows which helps to keep it flexible, light and airy, but suitable for spring evenings.
Easy to adjust, the pattern can be adapted to work on a single 1000m cake and would also work well as a scarf using a thicker weight of yarn and completing less repeats.
