Granny Merge Moebius Inspiration
Cowls and Scarves are definitely my winter go to accessories. They go with everything and are so quick to work up, like this easy granny stitch crochet pattern. Granny Merge is a favourite stitch pattern of mine, as it works in any colour combo and is quick and fairly mindless. I like to use things again and coordinate and when I was working on a new version of the Granny Merge Market Bag I realised that I didn’t have a cowl in this stitch and a new pattern was born.

Easy Moebius Cowl Pattern info & tips
The Granny Merge Moebius is an experienced to intermediate crochet cowl pattern, however, it is written with beginners in mind.
The moebius is essentially a twisted loop. You create this loop at the beginning of your work, and then continue work around this whole loop for the remainder of the piece. For a visual guide to creating a moebius loop please see here.
Alongside the moebius technique this cowl features, double crochet and puff stitches and a simple semi repeating pattern. If you have previously made the Stella Cowl you will be familiar with the puff stitch. It will also mean you are familiar with the pattern and know what to expect from the design. The difference in the moebius is that you work the pattern from the centre of the work and so the pattern appears on “both sides” at the same time.
When forming your initial chain, make a few loops and then remove them from your hook.
Insert your hook from back to front into the first chain made, then also back through the working loop. Continue to make your chain and follow the pattern directions.
This will help to ensure that you do not twist your chain – this is VERY important. If you twist your initial chain your intended twist will have the opposite effect.
Use a stitch marker to keep a track of the beginning of your work. Because you are working in a longer loop round it can be easy to get confused and think you are working in the wrong place on a moebius. I use a brightly coloured stitch marker that contrasts with my work to ensure that I know where the beginning of the work is – this is especially helpful when two successive rounds are the same.

Notes:
- Please read through the entire pattern BEFORE you start your project
- This cowl is made using the moebius technique
- This pattern has 2 sizes, young adult, adult
- There is no seam – pay close attention to beg/end of rows
Stitches & Abbreviations:
- Chain – ch
- Double Crochet – dc
- Slip Stitch – sl-st
- Skip – sk
- Turning Chain – tch
Start:
Ch92 – join with a slip stitch to the beginning ch being careful not to twist your chain.
*tip – to avoid twisting your chain, make 5-10 chains. Remove your hook from the working loop and insert it into the first ch, insert back through the working loop and continue to make your chains. Once you have reached the required number, yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook to join and create your loop.
Round 1:
Ch3 (counts as a dc), 2dc in the same st, *ch1, sk3, 3dc in the next st*around until 3 sts remain.. Do not join, flip your work, ch1, 3dc into the base of the beginning 3dc, *ch1, 3dc in the base of the next 3dc group*, repeat around to the last group, ch1, join with a sl-st into the top of the beginning 3dc grp.
If this is done correctly, you should have a gentle continuous loop in a figure 8 in your work. There will be a small hole here – this is normal and we will close this at the end of the piece.
Round 2:
Ch1, turn, sl-st into the ch1 sp, ch3, 2dc into the sp, ch1, 3dc in the next sp* repeat around to the last sp, ch1, join with a sl-st into the top of the beg 3dc.
Round 3:
Ch3, turn, dc in every st and sp around to the beginning ch3, join with a sl-st into the top of the beg ch3.
Round 4:
Ch3, turn, dc in each st and sp around to the last st. Join with a sl-st to the top of the beginning ch3.
Round 5:
Ch3, turn, 2dc into the same st, *ch1, sk3, 3dc into the next st*, repeat around until 3 sts remain, ch1, join with a sl-st into the top of the beg ch3.
Round 6:
Ch1, turn, sl-st into the ch1 sp, ch3, 2dc into the sp, ch1, 3dc in the next sp* repeat around to the last sp, ch1, join with a sl-st into the top of the beg 3dc.
Round 7 – 8:
Repeat rounds 3 – 4
Tie off and secure your ends
** Remember to use your darning needle and weave through the small hole at the start to close the gap. A gentle tug and 1 or 2 stitches should close the hole.
